Veteran safety Stevie Brown returned to the New York Giants after the Houston Texans released him on Friday.

The Giants confirmed the deal on Monday via their Twitter account, and the announcement came after the safety took a physical and worked out for the Giants on Sunday, per Kimberly Jones of NFL.com.

As soon as Brown became available, the Giants made sense as a landing spot. He spent the last three seasons with the team, and New York is dealing with a number of injuries in its secondary with just two weeks remaining before the regular season begins.

In an article for ESPN.com, Dan Graziano pointed out why the Giants are appealing to Brown and listed all of the team's defensive backs who are currently dealing with health problems:

Brown didn't want to leave the Giants and is surely in touch with former teammates and other members of the organization. He's undoubtedly aware of the injuries to Bennett JacksonNat BerheJustin Currie and Mykkele Thompson and the fact that the likely starters in Saturday's preseason game—Brandon Meriweather and Landon Collins—are both strong safeties.

Brown's greatest success in the NFL came with the Giants in 2012, when he recorded eight interceptions.

The 28-year-old isn't immune to injuries, as he missed the entire 2013 season after tearing his ACL. He did return to play in all 16 games last season, making eight starts, though he struggled in pass coverage. Pro Football Focus (via Nick Powell of NJ.com) noted opposing quarterbacks had a 70.3 completion percentage against him.

At this point in the preseason, the Giants are desperate for bodies. Brown may not be the player he was before his knee injury, but New York's coaching staff knows him well and can work around those limitations.
